Nigeria: As Govt Prepares to Recruit 500,000 Teachers...

Many stakeholders blame the development on government's reduction of avenues for teacher training, saying apart from scrapping the old teacher-training colleges, the colleges of education that train primary to middle level teachers are almost extinct. As a way of resolving this, they
said these lapses must be quickly corrected and the lost prestige restored to the teaching profession. "We must use the present unemployment challenge as an opportunity for restoration of this noble profession.

500,000 teachers' recruitment: Matters arising

The decision of the Federal Government to recruit 500,000 teachers as part of its plans to revamp the country’s education sector has continued to generate divergent views taking into cognisance workable modalities to realizing the plans. Our Correspondent, ELIJAH ONUCHEOJO OYIGU reports

ADAMU ADAMU Minister for Education

Pros and cons in recruiting 500,000 teachers

Thousands of public schools in the country suffer the scarcity of qualified teachers and the problem is further exacerbated by the lack of ability and initiative to handle the problem squarely. The situation is particularly chronic in rural areas where in some schools there are reportedly between two and three teachers to take care of the whole school.
The shortage of science and mathematics teachers and the rampant cases of teacher absenteeism in rural schools have reached crisis level. In the FCT for instance, there are rural schools with between two and four teachers while more and more teachers carry out ‘multi-grade’ teaching in order to keep the pupils busy.

500,000 Teachers’ Recruitment Portal Crashes On Day One

The recruitment of 500,000 teachers by the Federal Government might have run into a hitch as the website for the exercise crashed on Sunday following what was suspected to be massive applications by prospective candidates. The Federal Government had, last week, announced that the recruitment of the teachers would commence on Sunday, directing interested Nigerians to apply through http://portal.npower.gov.ng. But attempts by one of our correspondents to register on the portal around 6.48pm on Sunday failed as the website was not available.

FG’s recruitment of 500,000 unemployed graduates for teaching jobs commences June 12

Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu,

The Federal Government said on Wednesday that it will start taking applications online for positions in the 500,000 direct teacher jobs scheme, through an internet portal named npower.gov.ng. in what it described as the first roll out of its N500 billion social investment programmes.

WHO IS N-POWER FOR

What is N-Power?

N-Power is a job creation and empowerment initiative of the Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria. N-Power is designed to help young Nigerians acquire and develop life-long skills to become solution providers in their communities and to become players in the domestic and global markets.
Why N-Power?
Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development. Despite the current high level of unemployment, harnessing Nigeria’s young demography through appropriate skill development efforts provides an opportunity to achieve inclusion and productivity within the country.  Large-scale skill development is the main policy thrust of the N-Power Programme.
N-Power addresses the challenge of youth unemployment by providing a structure for large scale and relevant work skills acquisition and development while linking its core and outcomes to fixing inadequate public services and stimulating the larger economy. The modular programmes under N-Power will ensure that each participant will learn and practice most of what is necessary to find or create work. The N-Power Teacher Corps involves a massive deployment of 500,000 trained graduates who will assist to improve the inadequacies in our public services in education, health and civic education.  Some of these graduates will also help in actualizing Nigeria’s economic and strategic aspirations of achieving food security and self-sufficiency.
N-Power is also preparing young Nigerians for a knowledge economy where, equipped with world-class skills and certification, they become innovators and movers in the domestic and global markets. Nigeria will have a pool of software developers, hardware service professionals, animators, graphic artists, building services professionals, artisans and others. N-Power also focuses on providing our non-graduates with relevant technical and business skills that enhance their work outlook and livelihood.
In sum, N-Power is segmented as follows:
  • N-Power Teachers Corps– 500,000 graduates
  • N-Power Knowledge – 25,000 non-graduates
  • N-Power Build– 75,000 non-graduates
Who can apply?
The N-Power programme is for all eligible Nigerians looking to work gainfully. However, the initial programmes have been designed for young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35.
What are you waiting for? Visit www.npower.gov.ng and get N-Powered.
Registration has started since June 11, 2016.
